Trauma support following Paris Attacks

Added on the 17th November 2015

Trauma and PTSD expert Professor Neil Greenberg has been interviewed by a number of BBC radio stations today about his views on psychological consequences of the Paris attacks.

Professor Greenberg is the Clinical Director of March on Stress and the President of the UK Psychological Trauma Society.

Talking about the effect of the terrorist attacks he said: “The terrible events that took place in Paris are clearly very traumatic for those directly involved; survivors, witnesses, emergency service workers and victims’ families. Those affected will understandably be distressed but most should notice their symptoms reduce over the coming days and weeks, although unfortunately it is inevitable that a minority will suffer with longer term difficulties. What is important is to support and identify these people to ensure they receive the help they need to make a good recovery so they can get on with their lives.

“I would recommend that anyone who was involved should seek help if symptoms persist beyond a month or two and organisations who have staff based in Paris, or whose staff travel to Paris, should be supported and monitored. Structured peer support, such as Trauma Risk Management (TRiM), can help to identify those who may still be suffering in the weeks to come and can be used to ensure signposting to specialist help as needed.”
