STEP campaign calls for the practical step of mandatory TRiM

Added on the 23rd April 2025

As the leading provider of TRiM (Trauma Risk Management) training in the UK, we commend Dorset Police’s commitment to supporting their officers following traumatic incidents; particularly those involving suicide.

The implementation of TRiM for every officer attending such distressing scenes is a bold and compassionate step in recognising the mental health needs of frontline staff.

We’re also encouraged to see strong and vocal support from Police Federations, helping to drive this conversation forward and ensure officers receive the care they deserve. Federations across the country are backing the new STEP – Suicide Trauma Education Prevention – campaign, which raises awareness of the amount of trauma officers face in their jobs, and where they can access support.

As James Dimmack, Chair of Dorset Police Federation, rightly says: “The alarming rates of police officer suicides are deeply troubling. Officers are increasingly exposed to huge pressures, and the number of traumatic incidents they attend would be incomprehensible to most members of the public. I am a huge supporter of the TRiM process and I’m fully behind any initiative to reinforce this support.”

Georgina Godden, March on Stress Business Development Director, said: “At March on Stress, we worked with Dorset Police over many years to implement TRiM, and we’re proud to continue to support many Police Forces across the UK with TRiM and psychological health training and consultancy.

“Many of our associate trainers come from policing backgrounds, bringing first-hand experience of operational trauma and extensive knowledge of TRiM in a policing context. Their insight and empathy ensure the training we deliver is practical, credible and impactful.

“We fully back Dorset’s approach and the broader STEP (Suicide Trauma Education Prevention) campaign, and we’re committed to helping more forces create supportive environments for their people.”
